Light and Loveliness

the ship i sail crashes the rocks

sharp water lashes

striking stones scrape

thunderous fear claps overhead

reverberations of brokenness

from lifetimes ago

revisiting aches, once put to rest

insides churn and boards buckle and

i wonder how long i will last

i am tender of heart and strong of will

i hold with white knuckles and pray nothings

and thrash

fearing not reality, but memory

i struggle to live now what is now

and leave then what was then

to let light touch my eyes

to make bright what i often forget

i am not the sailor, only the sail

stretched wide to catch wind

to catch breath

the promise that only surrender and trust

can bring up from the deep

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Phil. 4:6-7

Life & Faith / Poetry

waves of trouble crash
heart-sand swept out
drawn to deep
where current makes strong from weak
wind makes rough the calm seas

words swell full the dry, parched soul
emptiness generously filled
thirst wholly satisfied
brokenness masterfully mended
in tossed and blinding water

pride traded away for lasting love
to flood only insides and outsides
upsides and downsides
life full to the brim with promise
only if pride will drown

the invitation to see eternity
beyond skin and sorrow
a humble journey
never walked in comfort
never found in marketplaces
discovered only in hearing
the spoken Truth of ages

the upside down life
riches found in giving all
goodness found in yielding
spring hope alive in desert places
life called out of barrenness

spirit threads spun
by feeble hands gentle
knees down, eyes up
to the mountains where
faith is set in stones
with careful thought

in distress, not destroyed
for You help and have helped
then, now, and again
before and behind and beside

good courage, no fear
for You are with me

You are with me

Few Words

One photo a week of our family throughout the year. 18/52

few words, many thoughts
rollercoaster of calm and chaos
ordinary tasks bound to thoughtful introspection
never pausing with the moving on to something new
dishes washed, dishes dried
toys in bins
pride laid down for humble joys
again and again
full but empty
a cycle familiar but still uncomfortable
the giving up to gain what waits beyond my vision

aches hang bare and lonely
longing for heaven
but living something close
living yes the best i can
giving more
focused attention
moments that can never be replaced

spring to follow hard
live a journey traveled less
a mess with heart and soul
the art of doing love
